About the Event
Have you ever wanted to go camping but you weren’t sure where to begin? Or maybe you’re interested in honing your camping skills or want to learn more about backpacking or winter camping? Whether you are a newbie, an experienced camper, or somewhere in between, this workshop is for you! Our hope is that you will walk away from this workshop feeling more knowledgeable, more confident about your abilities, and eager to get outside!
What is this workshop about? Camping is a fun way to experience nature and the outdoors. However, it can be intimidating for some who have never camped, are unsure about what to expect, or feel unprepared for a certain camping experience. Whether you are wanting to go camping for the first time, have questions about camping with kids, are interested in enhancing your camping skills, or are thinking of stepping away from the car into the backcountry, experienced outdoorspeople, campers, and gear experts will provide you with knowledge, skills, and abilities to help you feel more well-equipped and confident about your next camping adventure. We hope to educate people on how to camp safely and comfortably.
Where is the workshop held? At Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City… rain or shine! Come grab a beer and talk to us about camping!
Why is this workshop important? There are so many proven benefits of being in nature and sleeping under the stars, and being outdoors can provide a sense of balance and peace. Camping with family and/or friends, or even by yourself is one of the easiest and best ways to experience these benefits. Being prepared and having the necessary knowledge and skills are key factors that lead to a successful camping trip. This workshop teaches important skills and provides guidance in preparing for a camping or backpacking trip.
What will we do? We’ll cover gear, skills and techniques, and local camping destinations. The plan is to have several campsite set-ups where you’ll learn about and gain hands-on experience with tents, camp stoves and cookware, backpacks, sleeping bags, clothing, and other gear. We’ll provide packing lists for what you might need for a particular trip, where you might purchase gear, and how you may be able to use things you already have at home. We’ll also have a campfire going so you can try your hand a roasting marshmallows and making s’mores!
What will we learn? Camping gear knowledge and usage, different camp cooking techniques and menu ideas, and local camping destinations.
